UCLA Raided While Netanyahu pushed his Palestinian genocide off the headlines with his cynical Iran maneuver, young people throughout the country are putting it right back. Students at UC Berkeley, Cal Poly Humboldt, Stanford, Sonoma State, San Francisco State, Sacramento State and University of San Francisco joined students at colleges throughout the country to establish occupations in support of Palestinians. Outrage at Israel’s attempted genocide in Gaza has produced a movement of encampments at Harvard, Columbia, Barnard, Boston University, Yale, MIT, NYU, USC, UT Austin, and many more so far. Police have arrested hundreds, and yet the protests persist and continue to expand. They spoke out and shut it down when the FCMAT refused to provide answers. FCMAT is a non-profit” funded by the State of California which they said had been used as a tool to destroy public schools in Black and Brown working class communities while expanding charters. The FCMAT tried to keep the community and labor members out but were forced allowed them to speak and later were forced too adjourn the meeting after speaker demanded answers. The FCMAT board is made up mostly of superintendents from rural white districts and also charter representatives. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has backed FCMAT allowing to push forward with the closure of 11 schools in Oakland and around the state. The crowd was mostly peaceful; however, I was hassled by some self-appointed patriots dressed in bullet-proof vests, brawling gloves and fancy sunglasses. A fervid cry went up from some acolyte citing my nonexistent membership in Black Lives Matter, Antifa and my supposed citizenship of a foreign country! This caused a few of the larger folks to focus on me in an attempt to physically stop me from doing journalism. Fake news fake news,” the crowd screamed at me. A few folks even turned to that old chestnut of Go Home Nigger to impede my enthusiasm. Dodging and running I managed to remain unmolested and got some more photography done. The cops on the scene were charmingly uninterested in protecting me from these hefty fascists. As the protest faded out there were a few dust ups and assaults resulting in several arrests with a much larger police and fire department presence as a result. A woman named Berlinda Nibo was assaulted and threatened but was eventually saved by a few good folks in the crowd.
